History of Bike Trails in New Zealand
There's nothing more captivating to most people than a good story. The right story can make something that was awful, seem mediocre, and it can turn something that's already good into something grand. The latter is certainly the case with one of the most famous bike trails in New Zealand. If you haven't already heard about the Otago Central Rail Trail, strap yourself in for a compelling ride.
The Story of One of the Grandest Bike Trails in NZ
The late 1800s were interesting times for New Zealand. Riding the waves of profitable gold rushes in the 1860s, the government commenced work on a splendid rail line that would connect Central Otago and Dunedin. A simple enough task, one might think, this 248km worth of railroad took 42 years to finish! Why the delays? War, financial crises, and depressions slowed work to a snail's pace, but it remained steady until the railway was finally completed at the turn of the 20th century. From then on, the rail was used as intended, to provide a link between the two regions and transport freight more efficiently from place to place. It remained fully operational until 1990, by which time transporting goods using trucks and roadways became a better option. It was recognised as an important regional landmark and thus selected to be part of New Zealand's Cycle Trail Project that became an exceedingly beautiful cycling path.
Since then, the trail has flourished and become one of the most popular bike trails in NZ. It starts at Middlemarch in the east, ending at Clyde in the west (with a slight diversion to the north in the middle) covering about 150km. The path is abundant with stunning open country. The towns along the way do contain developed facilities to assist trailgoers, though in-between one must be self-sufficient for a good portion of their journey. The path boasts tens of thousands of visitors every year along its various sections, and different companies provide a range of scenic tours, getaways, and bike rentals for those wanting to get in on the action.
