Preparing for Your Trek along the Central Otago Rail Trail

Cycle Surgery can help you experience New Zealand's most amazing bike trail, the Central Otago Rail Trail. Our family owned and operated business has been in the cycling industry since 2000 and has been providing custom bike hire along the Otago Central rail trail for the past decade. In addition to bike hire, we offer shuttle transfers, baggage transfers, and tour itineraries for our clients to enjoy the ultimate cycling experience in the country. While we can help you with high-quality custom designed bikes and full tour plans, there are some things that you can do to prepare for your time on the trail. We want you to get the most out of your excursion, so we recommend that you do the following.

Condition Yourself and Your Bottom

It is probably a good idea for you to get out and ride a bike two to four times per week for about two months before your holiday. This will help your conditioning and also get your bottom accustomed to sitting in a bike seat for long periods. Cycle Surgery bikes come with gel seats and are designed for maximum comfort, but it is still a good idea to do some prep work.

Prepare for the Weather

Be prepared for the weather conditions on the Otago Central rail trail. The weather is mostly dry and sunny. The summer months offer some very hot days although it is a dry heat. Winter days are often cold with high temperatures in the mid-teens. Spring and autumn bring their own set of challenges. Be prepared for all four seasons in one day - it can happen on the trail.

What to Bring on the Otago Central Rail Trail

In addition to the appropriate clothing, there are a number of personal items that you should bring with you for your trail tour. Water is of the utmost importance. There are a few sections of the trail where access to water is limited. Cycle Surgery recommends that each person brings 1.5 to 2.5 litres of water per day. If your holiday is in the summer, you probably need to bring a bit more. Bring plenty of healthy snacks as biking the trail is demanding. Be sure to pack toilet paper; there are plenty of stops along the trail but carry your own toilet paper.

Sunscreen is a must. Most days are sunny and dry. Even in the winter months, you can still develop sunburn. Central Otago in the summertime is one of the hottest areas in all of New Zealand. Along with the sunscreen, a small first aid kit is handy. Include your mobile phone and a charger on your list of personal items. Coverage is excellent in some areas and not great in others. Try and charge your phone every night if possible. We also recommend that you take plenty of pictures of your time on the trail. That way, you can post them to Facebook and tag Cycle Surgery.
